"As Seen in the Salvation Army Magazine: The War Cry."

Something tragic yet wonderful is transpiring in the Eisenhower Unit, a hospital ward for military veterans stricken with dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Pick's disease. In this ward, a generation of American warriors, a regiment of old soldiers, is fading away while it battles one last enemy. Some of these men are decorated war heroes, and others achieved remarkable success in civilian life. All have served their country honorably. This website is dedicated to the veterans, their families, and the devoted professionals who lovingly care for the veterans. You will find a memoir that traces the Eisenhower Unit experiences of a son and his demented father, a disabled Korean War veteran. Photo galleries sketch life before and after dementia-a relentless and wicked disease. If you benefit in some way from this website, please consider a donation to The Eisenhower Unit Trust Fund, by following the directions below (near the bottom of the page). Your gift will be used to enhance the care given to the Eisenhower Unit veterans, and their comrades in similar facilities.

About half the men in the unit do not have family or friends; they never have a single visitor.
They rely on secondhand clothes donations for their clothing needs.
The budget for the hospital keeps getting cut and there's not much left over for personal needs.
